This NAV (Nano Air Vehicle) was developed by AeroVironment with the purpose to create a new class of air vehicle system capable to operate outdoor and when needed to pass through a door or a window and observe the interior of a building. It’s able to fly up to 8 minutes and is supplied with a camera. The NanoHumingbird looks like a real Colibri and its total weight is 19 grams, its wingspan is 16 cm and has maximum speed of 17km/h. Well this robot is a bit bigger than a real Colibri, but considering that these 19 grams include batteries, motors, navigation systems, camera and everything needed for flight, it comes quite amazing. But does the development of this NAV really costs 4 million $? It looks unbelievable but this is the sum that DARPA contributed to AeroVironment to develop it.
The abilities of the aircraft include: vertical climbing and descending, flying sideways left and right, hovering in mid-air, rotating clockwise and anti-clockwise. This little robotic bird is stable against wind from the side with speed of 2 m/sec (5 mph). It also demonstrated excellent flight control during flying from outdoors to indoors and then back to outdoors through a normal sized doorway.
